The latest season of Bridgerton has just been released and it focuses on the captivating love story between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton). Interestingly, Jessica Madsen, who plays the role of the mean girl Cressida Cowper, revealed in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly that the show’s creators filmed an alternate ending for her character. Before we dive into the details, a heads up: spoilers for Bridgerton season 3, Part 2 ahead.
In Bridgerton’s latest season, Cressida takes centre stage with a scheme to reinvent her future when she falsely claims to be the author behind Lady Whistledown. She uses malicious tricks in the hope of seeking escape from an undesirable marriage with an elder suitor and carving out a new destiny. Along the way, she resorts to blackmailing targeting Penelope and Colin. However, Cressida’s elaborate plans collapse. In the final moments of Bridgerton Season 3, she is seen riding off in a carriage seemingly resigned to banishment with her spinster aunt in a remote corner of Wales.
However, Madsen’s recent revelation about Cressida’s fate hints that the character’s story is far from over. Madsen told Entertainment Weekly that an alternate ending was filmed suggesting a different trajectory for Cressida. In this version, Cressida’s mother, Lady Cowper joins her daughter in the carriage.
“We did shoot a different ending,” Madsen told Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t know whether she is going to her aunt’s because we actually don’t see her aunt in the carriage. So, it could be that she’s off somewhere by herself.” She mentioned that in the alternate ending, Lady Cowper, Cressida’s mother, came to her rescue. They both got into a carriage and left together.
“I had a caged bird in my hair with a little door and Lady Cowper had the key,” Madsen added.
Showrunner Jess Brownell also told The Weekly that they had opted for a different direction for Cressida’s fate leaving the door open for possibilities for her future. She explained that they had filmed an alternate ending where Cressida’s mother accompanies her daughter in the carriage.
“It was a really beautiful moment. But in the edit, Shonda [Rhimes] and I talked about the fact that it felt like an ending for Cressida. It felt like it wrapped up her story and we intentionally wanted to leave it so that we can tell a bit more story with Cressida next season,” she added.
Meanwhile, all the episodes of Bridgerton Season 3 are now streaming on Netflix. Based on the book series by Julia Quinn, the show originally premiered its first season on December 25, 2020.
