Indian cinema churns out a lot of patriotic films from time to time, but very few have had the effect that the 1997 film Border had on moviegoers. This JP Dutta film is considered a milestone as far as patriotic movies are concerned. Set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the film is based on the events of Battle of Longewala. The movie became a huge hit and earned Rs 65 crore against a Rs 10 crore budget. It was the second highest grossing film of the year behind Dil Toh Pagal Hai. Not a lot of people know that JP Dutta made Border in the memory of his brother who was in the defence forces himself. JP Dutta’s brother was an Indian Air Force pilot, who died in a MIG accident in 1987. The director dedicated this film to his brother. This is the reason JP Dutta has often said that Border is a film that is very close to his heart.
Border boasted an ensemble cast which included Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Puneet Issar, Sudesh Berry, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Tabu, Pooja Bhatt, Raakhee Gulzar and Sharbani Mukherjee.
Border did wonders to the careers of many of its stars like Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna, but one actress who did not benefit from the film at all was Sharbani Mukherjee. Sharbani is the cousin of successful actors Kajol and Rani Mukherjee. She played the role of Suniel Shetty’s wife in Border and although her performance in the film was appreciated, it did not help her career as no good offers came her way. When offers in Hindi cinema dried up, she appeared in some Malayalam films but was not able to achieve success there as well. She appeared in a few music videos thereafter, which did not help her career either and now she has been away from the world of entertainment for quite some time.
