Payal Kapadia made history at Cannes with her film, ‘All We Imagine As Light’ winning the ‘Le Grand Prix’ award at the prestigious film festival. The film was the first Indian movie to compete in the main competition at Cannes in 30 years. Post the big win, actress Chhaya Kadam who played a titular role in the film danced her heart out at the Cannes Red Carpet. While she danced, a handful of people criticised her. The actress has now reacted to the same.
Addressing people’s harsh opinion about her dance on the red carpet, Chhaya in a conversation with PTI shared, “Kyun nahin? Just to be part of the main competition after 30 years is a huge achievement, not to mention the award that we won. Why follow protocol? Hum apni khushi aise hi dikhaate hain, kood kood kar. (That’s how we show our joy, by jumping and dancing in joy).”
She also opened up about the big win and expressed her happiness. “I am so happy I don’t have the words for it.” Asked who started grooving first, the Madgaon Express actor opined, “I’m not sure at this point, but it was probably me. There was just so much happiness around.”
On a closing note, Chhaya shared, “The sign that the film would win big at the festival was apparent… This Grand Prix win is one for the history books.”
Chhaya Kadam had two Bollywood releases this year – Laapata Ladies and Madgaon Express. These films received good reviews from both audiences and critics. Chhaya Kadam played a dangerous criminal in Madgaon Express while playing the role of a kind-hearted tea stall owner in Laapata Ladies.
The year has been kind to Chhaya Kadam because not only has she had two successful films this year, but she also got to attend her first Cannes Film Festival.
Chhaya Kadam attended the festival dressed in traditional Marathi attire. In an Instagram post that she shared where she showed off her attire, she revealed that the saree and the nose ring she wore belonged to her late mother. She also expressed grief that she could not realise her dream of making her mother board a flight. In the caption, she wrote, “Mom, my dream of making you travel in a plane remains unfulfilled but today I brought your saree and nose ring on a flight to the Cannes Film Festival and so I am satisfied. Still, you were needed today to watch this. Love you a lot.”
Chhaya’s debut in Hindi cinema came with Singham Returns, where she had a single scene with Ajay Devgn. She will be next seen in the Marathi film Ghe Double.
