The Censor Board will consult historians over the accuracy of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavati, which -- according to Rajput organisations -- has shown their queen in poor light , sources on the board have said.
Sources said historians will be consulted and the certification will take time as it is a "sensitive" issue and because Bhansali has claimed that his film is based on actual events in history.
All sides in the raging controversy have already been heard, with reports that saying the delay in certification was not because state elections in Gujarat were around the corner.
CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi has already been quoted by a television channel as saying he will consult "specialists" during the certification of the film which has Deepika Padukone playing the Rajput queen, with Shahid Kapoor playing her husband Ratan Singh and Ranveer Kapoor playing sultan Alauddin Khilji . Joshi said CBFC also wants to take a “balanced decision” about the Deepika Padukone-starrer but it should be given enough time to do that.
Rajput organisations and political leaders from different parties have objected to the release of the film saying it "distorted history" and that it showed the Rajput queen in a poor light by featuring a dream sequence of her with Khilji, who sacked the fort in 1303 AD. Journalists privy to a private screening of the film have already reported that there was not a single scene featuring the two together.
CBFC chief Joshi had on Monday spoken against the private screening saying it put unnecessary pressure of the Board which needed the "space and time" to reach a "neutral decision".
"You are expecting CBFC to take a well thought out decision. How is that possible? You are not even giving it space and the time,” Joshi said on the sidelines of the ongoing International Film Festival of India in Goa. He said the Board would "take a decision keeping everyone in mind -- from filmmakers to the various sections of the society."
