Director duo Abbas Mastan revealed musicians Nadeem-Shravan did not want Kajol to star in Baazigar. The filmmakers, in a new interview, revealed that Kajol was locked before they approached the music directors to come onboard of the film. The music directors were ready to sign the film but on the condition that they would replace Kajol. The reason being, Nadeem-Shravan had a personal issue with the actress.
Baazigar was released in 1993. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan in the lead while Shilpa Shetty and Kajol played pivotal roles. The film also starred Dilip Tahil and Johnny Lever. In the interview, director Abbas Mastan aka Abbas Alibhai Burmawalla and Mustan Alibhai Burmawalla, revealed that Nadeem-Shravan had asked the directors to remove Kajol from the film otherwise they wouldn’t work on it. The director said they turned down their condition.
“Nadeem-Shravan used to know us very well. We went and met them and discussed about the film. The reason why they opted out of the film, we can’t clearly remember,” Abbas said, in an interview with Radio Nasha. However, Mastan said that he remembered the issue.
“Nadeem-Shravan has some personal issue with Kajol and Tanuja ji. They asked us if we can change the female lead. We refused because we had already committed to her. We had finalised Kajol and she had also signed the contract. We refused to make any changes. Picture banege toh Kajol toh rahege he (If the film will be made, Kajol will star in it). They responded to this by saying, ‘Toh hum nahi rahege (Then we will not do the film),” he said.
While the director duo did not recall the reason behind their feud, reports claimed Nadeem-Shravan had an incident with Kajol and her mother during one of their visits to their house. It is claimed that Tanuja’s behaviour felt like an insult to the musical duo, which led to their fallout.
Nadeem-Shravan’s loss became Anu Malik’s gain. The music composer came on board of the film and delivered several hits, including Baazigar O Baazigar, Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein, Kitabein Bahut Si and Chhupana Bhi Nahi Aata.
