Premier Australia batter Steve Smith was left stunned by the third umpire after he was given out during the ODI World Cup against South Africa on Thursday. Chasing the 312-run target, Australia lost the openers David Warner and Mitchell Marsh cheaply, Smith tried to revive the chase but was stunned by the third umpire with a bizarre decision which went against him.
Smith was batting on 19 and Kagiso Rabada’s ball hit his front pad, on-field umpire Joel Wilson gave it not out as it seemed that the ball was missing the leg-stump. Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma decided to take a review after a loud appeal from wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock.

Both Smith and umpire Wilson were in disbelief after the ball-tracking showed the ball hitting the leg stump.
The fans on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, claimed that Smith was robbed as some call it a glitch which cost the Aussie batter his wicket.

Umpire gave it not out..Thats mean ball needs to hit 100% at the stump to Reverse the decision of umpire..it’s Clearly not out, Sometimes DRS is so Crucial..Steve Smith’s wicket change the whole momentum to south africa@stevesmith49 @marnus3cricket #Stevesmith #Rabada #AUSvsSA pic.twitter.com/9Xv0X6yWDn— Bloody_Vishal (@BloodyVishal) October 12, 2023

Earlier, Quinton de Kock showed his class with a second successive hundred while Aiden Markram cashed in on his rich vein of form with a fifty to steer South Africa to 311/7 against Australia in the World Cup on Thursday.
The 30-year-old de Kock, who will retire from the format after the World Cup, oozed confidence as he fetched 109 off 106 balls with the help of eight boundaries and five maximums, while Markram smashed 56 off 44 to help South Africa post the highest ODI total in Lucknow.
De Kock paced his innings well and troubled the Australian bowling attack, which cut a sorry figure, on a difficult Ekana pitch.
