As the summer heat rolls in, our thoughts turn to vacation and fun-filled adventures on the beach or in the mountains. Getting there is half the battle, but don't get cornered into the airport food court when it's time for lunch. We're giving you the scoop on how to eat healthy during your travels.

For travelers, it's obvious that foods such as nuts and fruits with peels pack well and don't require refrigeration.

Almonds are not only highly satiating, they provide vitamin E, which is essential for muscle health, as well as magnesium, vitamin B2 and plenty of protein.

Noshing on almonds could satisfy you enough to ward off food court cravings as you wait for your flight and, for those with a sweet tooth, bananas not only taste great, they provide potassium that could keep you from bloating during travel.

Chia seeds provide fiber, protein, calcium, antioxidants and omega-3s and are often sold in transportable packets.

Once onboard, sprinkle your chia seeds over the airplane's chicken dinner to balance out the nutrition and add some richness to the flavor.

Hot water with lemon has become a popular concoction that's thought to help with weight control and curb cravings, so pack some lemons and ask the flight attendants for hot water.

Remember that a balanced diet should not only include fresh fruit and essential fatty acids found in most nuts, but also whole grains, a protein source and veggies, says registered dietician Lindsay of The Lean Green Bean.

Don't give up entirely on packaged foods, for many companies are going all natural, swapping colorants and sweeteners for organic, protein-rich fare and even freeze-dried vegetables or vegetable extracts.

All-natural, organic bars are getting easier to come by and can provide a great taste variation to straight fruit and nuts in addition to being easy to carry.

Examples include Mule Bars, Chimpanzee, Hammer Bars and loAdebar.

While all of them come in a variety of flavors and include organic, natural ingredients, each has its specialty: Hammer bars contain no genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Chimpanzee bars are gluten free and loAdebars are vegan.

What's your reaction?
