Soha Ali Khan, an actress and author, recently shared her delightful experiences from a family trip to Australia. Captivated by the country’s summer holiday charm, Khan highlighted their love for beaches, Melbourne’s cricket ground, and the vibrant coffee culture. She emphasized the importance of planning a diverse itinerary while sharing tips for fellow travelers in Melbourne.
Question 1: Australia is a beautiful place, and your Instagram showcased a lovely spectacle of fireworks on NYE. How did you and the family arrive at Australia as a destination to bring in the new year?
Answer: We visited Australia last in 2020 and ever since then we’ve been wanting to go back. Being one of the few countries in the world which brings in the holiday season during the summer, it’s a completely different atmosphere with everyone coming together for beach side celebrations, enjoying delightful food, and gathering to watch the display of fireworks on New Years Eve.
Question 2: How was your experience living in an Airbnb for your Australia trip? Did you have any interactions with locals or unique cultural encounters during your stay?
Answer: We’ve always tried to pick Airbnb’s when travelling and with our daughter, that’s the kind of experience that we always want to have when visiting a destination – the feeling of being an insider more than an outsider when being part of a culture that’s different than the one back in India. The Airbnb interface is incredible, and that’s something we discovered on one of our previous trips to London. This time around, our host Lily was an absolute gem and gave us some amazing local suggestions – from restaurants to the best hideout stores to bring back souvenirs for our home.
Question 3: What are your favorite must-visit destinations/places/ restaurants in Australia, elaborate on the places.
Answer: Australia is a country which offers something for every traveler. Inaaya and I are absolute water babies and loved the pristine white sand beaches, and the Aspendale beach is an absolute favorite. Apart from that, the Melbourne cricket ground holds a very special place in my heart and we were lucky to visit it during this trip especially on my dad’s birthday. Making the most of a summer earlier than the one we have back home in Mumbai, we enjoyed picking and indulging in some scrumptious strawberries. If you plan a trip to Australia it’s something that should definitely be on your list of must dos.
Question 4: Any tips you would like to give fellow travelers planning their trip to Melbourne in the year?
Answer: Melbourne is one of the most magnificent cities in Australia and there is so much to experience! The place has an extremely diverse climate so research well and check for weather patterns before your trip. I would suggest don’t forget your umbrella, sunscreen and some extra layers that can be worn as needed. The place also has the most vibrant coffee and café culture that you must check out. Day trips are an absolute must if you are in Melbourne, you could explore attractions such as the Great Ocean Road, Yarra Valley wineries, Phillip Island, or the Dandenong Ranges. Lastly and most importantly, plan your itinerary in a way that allows you to soak in the beauty of Melbourne at your own pace.
Question 5: Lastly, we have noticed that you always opt for Airbnb as your travel partner whilst travelling domestic or international. What about the experience at a homestay makes you travel with them often?
Answer: Airbnb is our home away from home, it allows me and my family to travel just like we like. Kunal, Inaaya and I love spending our time playing board games and indulging in local snacks. It gives us the perfect space to unwind after being outdoors for hours together. There are absolutely no mundane moments when it comes to Airbnb, we love speaking to our Hosts, to get an understanding of the neighborhood, city and recommendations on the spots that we must visit. My Australian Airbnb will always be special as all three of us saw the most gorgeous fireworks right while cozying up in our room and bringing in 2024.
