Diwali 2024: When And How To Buy A Broom For Good Luck
If the broom is old or broken, it should not be used. The broom should always be used in good condition.

Diwali, one of India’s most significant festivals, is marked by numerous rituals, including cleaning the house, which symbolises welcoming Goddess Lakshmi. As per reports, Diwali will be celebrated on either October 31 or November 1 this year. Among the many things traditionally bought during Diwali, such as gold and silver, purchasing a broom is also considered auspicious by Hindu devotees.

It is believed that buying a new broom on Dhanteras or Diwali invites prosperity. There are specific rules to follow regarding the use and disposal of old brooms, as outlined by astrologer Dr Gaurav Kumar Dixit, based on Vastu principles.

According to Vastu, an old or broken broom should not be used, and a new broom must be purchased before discarding the old one. It is said that throwing away the old broom without first bringing in a new one can anger Goddess Lakshmi. Importantly, one should avoid discarding the old broom on auspicious days like Dhanteras, Narak Chaturdashi, and Amavasya, as it is believed to displease the goddess.

The broom’s placement in the house is also essential. It should be kept in the South-West direction, lying flat on the ground, and always hidden from view. Keeping a broom standing or in visible areas like the bed is considered inauspicious and can lead to health issues. Additionally, sweeping the bed with a broom is believed to cause health deterioration.

Different types of brooms, like flower and straw brooms, can be stored together. However, brooms should not be kept in pairs as this is believed to result in financial loss. If necessary, the North-East direction is also considered an appropriate place for storing brooms.

Paying attention to these Vastu tips during Diwali, especially regarding the handling of brooms, is believed to ensure good fortune and harmony in the household.
