The state-level celebrations as part of the World Tourism Day will be held here on Thursday. The day will be marked by various events, including cycle rallies, film shows and competitions.
The programmes will be based on the official theme of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation for 2012, ‘Tourism and Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development’. A seminar on ‘Aim of World Tourism Day’ will be organised at Abad Plaza Hotel followed by the official inauguration of the programme by the Tourism Minister. This will be followed by a bicycle rally spreading the tourism day message by a group of 20 pass outs from Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies. The rally will begin from Children’s Park and pass through High Court Junction, Banerji Road, MG Road and Fort Kochi. A 20-day-long mural demonstration performed by six artists headed by Prajeesh, head of Department of Mural Art, Sree Shankaracharya University, Kalady, will also commence on Thursday.
The painting will be done on a single 18-feet-long and 4-feet-wide canvas on the theme ‘Sustainable Energy and Tourism’. An English elocution competition on the official theme will be conducted for the tourism club members from various schools and colleges. The travel film show is expected to be held at Children’s Park Theatre.
“The Tourism Day celebrations are being held this time under the special attention of the District Collector. We are looking at a never-before-seen type of extensive celebrations to be held this year,” said T N Jayashankar, secretary of the District Tourism Promotional Council.
