New Delhi: What's common among Fergie, Nicki Minaj and Julia Roberts?

The Hollywood A-listers have all worn creations by Indian designers in the past year which saw 'desi' fashion going global in a big way.

Taking a break from the staple black dress, the stars sported colourful ensembles by Indian designers on the red carpet and won brownie points for it.

'Black Eyed Peas' singer Fergie has become a devoted fan of the label Falguni and Shane Peacock, wearing a feathered and embellished dress from their collection to the 2010 American Music Awards.

She sported another edgy outfit, custom made for her by the designers, at the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony, a embellished body suit with cut-outs and padded shoulders.

The husband-wife duo whose clientele also includes 'Queen of Pop' Madonna, rocker Ozzy Osbourne and R&B star Brandy, say that the use of colour sets apart Indian designers from others.

"Our designs are futuristic and we experiment with a wild colour palette. That makes the outfit unique and different from just another cocktail dress in black. Indian designers' use of colour is what sets them apart from the lot," said Falguni.

Manish Arora, the John Galliano of Indian fashion, added pop's hottest new kid on the block, Nicki Minaj, to his clientele which already boasts of names like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.

The 'Your Love' singer grabbed headlines with an elaborate dress by the Indian designer at the American Music Awards.

The coral-coloured dress, from the Spring 2011 collection, features extravagant gold skeleton-style structure including a ribcage design and the head-turning creation retails for approximately an eye watering $16,000.

The designer who recently showcased his collection at the Paris Fashion Week, said that it is not Indian fashion, but just some designers who have managed to make a mark globally.

"Indian fashion is not global per say, its only a few fashion designers who have put India on the global map though there is lot of potential for Indian fashion," said the designer.

"I have used lot of Indian embroidery but have not tried to make it look ethnic so that the garment stands out internationally. The idea is to look forward and not backward, also not forgetting that I am an Indian," said Arora.

Not just clothes, but Indian accessories too have found a place in the hallowed shelves of high-end retail stores abroad and on the arms of Hollywood beauties.

Ritu Beri's bags were sported by British socialite and designer Victoria Hervey and Meera Mahadevia, who was the first ever Indian accessory designer to showcase at the Vendome Luxury Exhibition in Paris this year, sold out her

collection.
