New Delhi: On world music day CNN-IBN brings you all about a golden oldie from Mughal-e-Azam. The legendary Lata Mangeshkar reflects on the classic romantic track Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya.
This hit track from 1960's classic Mughal-e-Azam brought together the dream team of Naushad, Lata Mangeshkar and lyricist Shakeel Badayuni.
"When we recorded the song, the last line had to be repeated for an echo effect. Those days, there were no machines for echo effects. Naushad ji made me stand in a second room and I sang from there and he recorded it. Then he made me come a little nearer and made me sing again and then recorded again. So this whole thing went on and that is how we got the echo effect," recalls Lata Mangeshkar.
If the song's recording was a task, then its set was even a bigger challenge. It took two years and Rs 15 lakh to construct the Sheesh Mahal at Mohan Studio in Mumbai where the song was recorded. And once it was ready, the team realised that with so many reflective mirrors, the Sheesh Mahal would be impossible to shoot in.
Naushad's son, Rahman Naushad says, "It was a question of pride. I was fortunate to attend the picturising of the song. The set stood for one year and everybody who went there had to go and see the set. It was a great set, just out of this world."
