KOCHI: Have you witnessed the sight of a hundred Mavelis clapping and singing together? Thanks to the initiative by the District Panchayat Office at Kakkanad, the place saw a wonderful spectacle of Mavelis reveling and singing ‘Onappattukal’. They were participating in the Maveli competition held by the District Panchayat. More than three hundred Mavelis participated in the competition, with the youngest one being just four years old and the eldest being 55. District Panchayat President Eldose Kunnappally said. “We’d like to appeal through Maveli to free us from the garbage and pollution menace. This attempt is the first of its kind where more than three hundred Mavelis have assembled."We have registered this event in the Limca book of world records,” he said. Excise Minister K Babu inaugurated the function. Thrikkakara Municipality Chairman P I Muhammadali was also present. Interestingly, there was a woman Maveli too. Prasanna Baskar came all the way from Irumbanam to participate in the competition. “I did this because I knew that most of the women find it difficult to dress up as Maveli, but I was always confident of doing it,” she said. K T Baby, who has sixteen years of experience dressing up as Maveli felt confident of winning the competition “I will try my best to win,” But he also admitted that he was threatened by newcomer Prasanna Bhaskar. “I truly acknowledge her courage to participate in the competition,” he said.P C Purushan ,Biju Thomas Al Firoz represented the District Literacy Mission.Biju Thomas stood first in the state youth festival held for those students appearing for the tenth equivalency programme. Yogesh who is just 9 years old came from Janaseva Sisubhavan, Aluva. The procession was held around the District Panchayat with its president at the helm of the procession, where the contenders are to be judged. There were also various other cultural programmes and a sumptuous feast to round off what was a truly memorable event.
