VELLORE : A 50-year-old woman arrived at the sub-collector’s office in Ranipet on Monday, and demanded action to help her get back her mortgaged house.She had a a can of kerosene with her and threatened to immolate herself. Malliga, a destitute woman of Malaimedu in Ranipet, had a house built under a government scheme in 1996. She has a son and daughter working in Chennai at present.Due to financial problems, she had mortgaged her house for `10,000 to Perumal of Lalapet. The agreement of the mortgage stated that Malliga need not pay any interest on the principal sum, and Perumal would own the house till she paid back the amount. However, Perumal has let out the house to his relatives.Malliga said when she approached Perumal two months back and offered to repay the original sum to get back her house, Perumal denied the agreement and threatened her of dire consequences.Malliga also alleged that a week later, she had approached a local regional weekly magazine official who got `15,000 from her and promised to get her back the house, but never kept his word. She said that she had submitted a petition to S P Kayalvizhi at SIPCOT police station, but no action had been taken.On Monday, Malliga went to the sub-collector’s office and threatened to immolate herself if her case wasn’t looked into.Following this, sub-collector in charge Ranganathan’s PA Ravi made inquiries with her. Inspector Nagaraj is conducting an inquiry with Perumal in this regard.
