CHENNAI: A 41-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging on Thursday after she allegedly failed to repay the chit money that she had collected from investors at Adambakkam.According to police, Maha alias Mahadevi of Thiruvallur Street in Adambakkam was found hanging in her house on Thursday morning. Police said the woman had been running chit in her area for the past 10 years with monthly schemes and special schemes for Deepavali.Sixteen persons, who had invested their money in the chit, had asked Mahadevi to return their money as she did not pay them even after the date of maturity last year, police added.The woman, who kept delaying in making the payment to the investors, finally promised to return the money this week. However, on Thursday morning, she was found hanging in her house.Police said her brother Ramu had lodged a complaint stating that some investors, who joined the chit, stopped paying money to Mahadevi abruptly and that had made it difficult for her to settle the money for others. Frustrated by this, the woman had committed suicide. Adambakkam police have registered a case and are investigating.
