Bengaluru: Amidst much speculation whether the Karnataka government would celebrate the Hampi Utsav this year, CM Kumarswamy laid rumors to rest, claiming that the government had never said that it had cancelled the three-day event.
"Such poverty had not fallen upon the state government that it could not celebrate Hampi festival. People want to unnecessarily politicise the issue. I will direct the officials to celebrate Hampi festival in a simple way," Kuramaswamy told reporters here.
The government came in for criticism last week when water resource minister and Bellari district in-charge minister DK Shivkumar announced that owing to the drought conditions in more than 10 districts, the state government has decided not to go ahead with the Hampi festival this year.
The opposition BJP had questioned the government on how it had the money to celebrate Tipu jayanti but was making excuses to celebrate the Hampi utsav.
The Hampi Utsav is a three-day long festival that celebrates the reign of the Vijayanagar empire. Hampi being a tourist destination attracts huge crowds during the utsav which sees cultural programmes likes dance, drama, puppet shows, processions and dazzling fireworks in the region.
