New Delhi: A leg injury last year nearly ended his career but Mark Webber didn't give up.
With his first-ever Formula One win in 130 races; Webber has re-ignited a season that appeared to be headed into the lap of Jenson Button.
It's been seven years since Webber made his Formula One debut but the moment to be called a Grand Prix winner finally arrived on Sunday when the Red Bull driver won the German Grand Prix.
Following his win some believe that Webber could be the new Nigel Mansell, the great British driver who took a while to win his first race but then the floodgates opened.
"Everybody in Australia who supported me on the way through and of course there were a few people who doubted me as well so hello to them as well. And it's just an incredible day for all the people who have helped me get to where I am," said
Webber after his win.
Webber is now in third place in the drivers standings. Button has a handy 22 and a half point lead but Webber’s teammate Sebastian Vettel is a mere point and a half ahead; making the battle between the teammates an interesting one to follow.
"So you know it was a good fight among us so I am very happy and looking forward to the next races. I think our car is competitive so looking forward," said Vettel.
Red Bull were obviously the team celebrating the most in Germany.
But Ferrari's horror season so far had at least a temporary respite. Felipe Massa's third place finish brings him into the top five among the drivers and the team is now just two and a half points behind third placed Toyota in the contstructors' championship.
"I think, you know, having a good result like this, a podium will definitely motivate the people to keep working, to keep pushing hard. And preparing a good car for the end of the championship and especially another great car for next year," said Massa.
The Formula One circus heads to Hungary in a couple of weeks time. Can Webber and Vettel edge even closer to Button?
