IDUKKI: As the hartal called by the LDF and the UDF in Idukki district on the Mullaperiyar dam issue affected normal life on Monday, there was some relief as the water level in the dam came down from 136.6 feet to 136.3 feet. The authorities have started mud clearing work in the spillways and the first spillway was cleared by evening. The work will end in a few days, the officials said.According to the dam officials, the decrease in water level was due to low rain and increase in intake of water by Tamil Nadu. The TN Water Authority has increased the intake of water to TN districts. The hartal was generally peaceful except for a few incidents reported from Kumily and Vandiperiyar town. In many parts of the district, Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa was burnt in effigy.Transport buses and private vehicles kept off the road as protestors blocked vehicles in many parts of the district. The Mullaperiyar Samara Samithi panthal was crowded with activists and locals. The fast by CPI MLA E S Bijimol and former MP P C Thomas along with Samara Samithi activists continued for the whole day.“Now the agitation has become part of the entire state. The Centre should take immediate action,” said Samara Samithi chairman C P Roy. The agitation which completed 1,802 days is not against Tamil Nadu government, but against the apathy of both the state and central governments, he said.
