MADURAI: The great grandchildren of V O Chidambaram Pillai (VOC), the legendary freedom fighter who operated the swadeshi ship, got a new shop at Madurai ‘Uzhavan Unavagam,’ on Saturday, thanks to the efforts of U Sagayam, District Collector.When the Collector received a petition from V G Sankaran of Theerthakadu for help, he made inquiries and found that Sankaran was a great grandchildren of VOC. Further inquiry revealed that Sankaran, his brother Arumugam and sister Dhanalakhsmi are indigent. Dhanalakhsmi was living on a Rs 3,000 pension and her brothers were eking out a living by doing odd wall painting works. The Collector immediately sanctioned Rs 5,000 and made arrangement for a bank loan. With this seed amount, the great grandchildren are setting up a shop in the Uzhavan Unavagam in Madurai. The Collector inaugurated the shop on Saturday.
