KOTTAYAM: A Vigilance probe is under way against George Joseph, Malankara Orthodox Church Association secretary, based on allegations of forgery, manipulation of records and swindling of the state exchequer.
It has been charged that he had drawn salary and other benefits as a teacher at PSVPM HSS, Iravan, Konni, though he assigned his duties to another person who periodically signed the school register even when Joseph was on official tours abroad and outside the state in his capacity as the Church officebearer.Through an RTI reply availed of by M B Jose of Amalagiri, Kottayam, from the Vigilance and Anticorruption Bureau (VACB), it has been clarified that the probe was instituted on April 6 and is being carried out by the Pathanamthitta unit.

The issue revolving the Church secretary had created an uproar in the Orthodox community, forcing the bishop's Synod to discuss the matter two months ago.

The meet also noted that the secretary had claimed to be on leave from the school so he could "selflessly serve" the Church denomination.

But while drawing the salary and the perks, the school register showed that he had marked his attendance even during the period when he had gone abroad with various missions of the Church.

However,the RTI reply was noncommittal on when the probe would be over.
