Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar will pay a visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran on May 22, 2024 to attend the official ceremony to pay condolences on the tragic demise of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Dr Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials in an unfortunate helicopter crash.
Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have also conveyed their condolences to the government and people of Iran.
Condoling the death of Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi, PM Modi took to X and wrote, “Deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic demise of Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His contribution to strengthening the India-Iran bilateral relationship will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Iran. India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow.”
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also visited the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi on Tuesday to convey India’s condolences on the tragic loss of the Iranian President.
Meanwhile, a one-day state mourning is also being observed across India on May 21 as a mark of respect for President Ebrahim Raisi. The national flag is being flown at half-mast on all official buildings with no official entertainment event during the period of state mourning.
The Iranian President, the country’s Foreign Minister and several other officials were found dead on May 20, hours after their helicopter crashed in a foggy, mountainous region of the country’s northwest, Iran state media reported.
