THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ‘Madre De Deus’ Church at Vettucaud, the renowned pilgrim centre for tens of thousands of faithful cutting across caste and creed, has finally received the much-awaited approval for its reconstruction, under the statutory CRZ guidelines. The good news was conveyed to the Church authorities on Tuesday evening by Shashi Tharoor MP, who had been vigorously following up the matter with the Union Minister for Environment & Forests for the past many months. Shashi Tharoor has brought the approval order, issued by the Ministry of Environment & Forests, on Wednesday. The order was signed on Tuesday, by Lalit Kapur, Director (LA).The proposal, seeking clearance under the Coastal Regulation Zone, for the reconstruction of the church was submitted by the church authorities in 2010 through the Kerala Coastal Zone Management Authority. The matter was subsequently processed by the Expert Appraisal Committee of the Ministry at its meetings held during August and September, 2011, leading to its recommendation for grant for the CRZ clearance.Tharoor expressed hope that the order would enable the completion of the reconstruction of the Vettucaud Church at the earliest.
