CHENNAI: The Budget Session, which begins on August 4, in all likelihood will be a stormy one. The two-and-a-half-month-old AIADMK government has to face the opposition parties on many issues, particularly the uniform system of school education (USE) and the charge of political vendetta in the light of a slew of land grab cases against DMK functionaries.Though Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has already denied this charge, the DMK is likely to rake up this issue and the implementation of USE in a big way during the session. Even aliies like the CPI, the CPM and the main opposition party DMDK, are in favour of implementing the USE from this year, in line with the HC verdict. The matter is pending before court and the final judgment is likely to be given soon.DMK president M Karunanidhi has already raised law and order problems.Finance minister O Panneerselvam is likely to make his first Budget a tax-free one. A detailed account of the State’s finances and the debt burden is expected to be part of his Budget speech.On Monday, representatives of the trading community had expressed their views at a pre-Budget meeting and placed many requisitions to remove tax on various goods. The government authorities were considering these representations. The session is likely to last about 40 days.
