Urumi: history from the vanquished's eyes
Urumi is touted as the first global film from Kerala.

Thiruvananthapuram: Touted as the first global film from Kerala, recently released ‘Urumi’ is an attempt to read history from the side of the vanquished, its director Santosh Sivan said.

“Generally, history is written from the perspective of the conqueror. But, ‘Urumi’ is an attempt to read history from the side of the defeated,” Sivan told reporters here.

The film, starring Prthviraj and Genilia D’souza, is rather a representation of historical facts on a fictional platform than an accurate narration of history, the ace director and cinematographer said.

The multi-crore movie, which hit theatres on Thursday, is based on the arrival of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in Kozhikode in the 15th century.

Tamil actor-cum choreographer Prabhu Deva, Bollywood actresses Tabu and Vidhya Balan, Malayalam actors Nithya Menon and Jagathy Sreekumar give more grace to the movie, Sivan said.

Prithviraj, who is also the co-producer of the movie, said ‘Urumi’ was his dream project.

“I have the advantage of being with the project right from the conceptual stage. I have even undergone a three-day crash training to learn the handling of ‘Urumi’, a weapon used by the bygone warriors of Kerala,” Prithviraj said.

Genelia, who did the role of a warrior princess, said the film was a different experience for her. “It was quite different from the other roles which I did so far. The role of the princess was quite challenging,” she said.

Santosh Sivan said he was planning to bring out the Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English versions of ‘Urumi’ soon.

Executive producer Mubina Rattonsey, producer Shaji Natesan and script-writer Sankar Ramakrishnan were also present at the interaction.
