BANGALORE: Describing the two-year-old regime of the UPA at the Centre as shameful, senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member M Venkaiah Naidu charged that it has failed miserably to live up to the expectations of the people.Speaking to the press persons here on Sunday, the BJP leader criticised the Manmohan Singh Government, which is completing two years in office, lockstockandbarrel and alleged that the UPA has been the "most dishonest" government in the history of the country.Stating that the 2G scam, involving a sum of Rs176,000 crore, was the biggest shame on the UPA-II, Naidu said that the two fundamental issues on which the UPA-II has completely failed are corruption and price rise.Listing out several performances of the UPA government the BJP leader opined that the biggest failure of the government was its sheer inability to contain the spiraling price rise of essential commodities. "The rise has been so continuous and so steep that the common man is unable to have one meal a day," he lamented.Maintaining that fiscal consolidation is no longer the priority of the government, BJP leader said that prices of essential food items are sky high and petrol prices have been increased 20 times in the name of rationalisation. He said that the UPA government was adopting antifarmer policies and had totally neglected the agriculture sector. "Food items became costlier and scarcer and not even a tonne of storage capacity was added in the last seven years.Referring to goofups in providing the list of the most wanted terrorists to Pakistan by the home ministry, he said that the security of the country seems to be the least priority on the union government."The home ministry has made our nation a laughing stock in the international community. Our country's external affairs minister reads out speech of another country's minister; this reflects the situation, he said.Lamenting that internal contradictions and lack of support between the ministers and coalition partners is forcing the government to compromise on the security of the nation. Naidu said that the masterminds of 26/11 are still roaming around freely in Pakistan and our ministers are busy having academic discussions with their counterparts. The threat of Maoist violence in several states and districts still remains, "Nobody knows as to what is the government policy towards Maoists," BJP leader chided.Saying that the UPA government at the Centre is not taking any initiative against those who have stashed crores of rupees of unaccounted money in foreign banks despite repeated rebukes from the Supreme Court, Naidu said that the government instead of unmasking the guilty seems to be protecting taxevaders to the hilt.
