New Delhi: A day after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley called those returning their awards rabid anti-BJP elements, another Bharatiya Janata Party leader has hit out at writers and filmmakers who have returned their awards. Union Minister Uma Bharti has now said that filmmakers returning awards is tarnishing India's image and not the government's.
In an interview to CNN-IBN, Bharti said, "5-7 people have made a strategy to tarnish the image of Modi government but Modi's image won't be tarnished by these incidents in fact an impression has been generated that India is an intolerant nation. They may not have conspired but have become a part of a conspiracy."
Many recipients of the coveted Sahitya Akdemi award returned their prizes accusing the BJP government and allied elements of spreading religious differences across India.
Over 40 writers and poets have returned their awards in protest against the Akademi's silence over recent cases of rising intolerance ranging from the murder of rationalist MM Karaburgi to lynching of a man in Dadri for allegedly storing beef.
Noted scientist PM Bhargava on Thursday said that he was forced to return his Padma Bhushan as the NDA government refused to rein in intolerance in the country.
Speaking exclusively to CNN-IBN, the leading biologist justified his stand pointing that he had been a strong critic of the UPA government as well. "I have attempted to take a stand on every stage," said Bhargava.
