KANNUR: The Kannur Central Prison witnessed a tense situation on Thursday with an MLA holding a dharna in front of the office of the Superintendent of the Prison demanding action against two employees of the jail for allegedly beating up two CPM remand prisoners on Wednesday evening.
The MLA, James Mathew, representing the Taliparamba constituency, lifted his dharna later following a decision taken by the DIG of Prisons, to place two wardens of the jail, Tintumon and Sanalkumar, under suspension in connection with the incident. The allegation of the CPM legislator was that the jail authorities had reintroduced the system of 'Nadayadi' (the practice of welcoming new prisoners with a bout of blows) with the treatment meted out to the two CPM prisoners brought to the jail on Wednesday evening.

The two CPM prisoners, Maneesh, 25, and Renjith, 27, who were accused in the murder case of a Muslim League worker at Pattuvam in Taliparamba, were brought to the Central Prison here after they were remanded to judicial custody by the court on Wednesday evening. The two prisoners were severely beaten up by the employees of the jail. They wanted the jail authorities to shift them to hospital seeking medical treatment.

As the incident took a turn for the worse, CPM leaders M V Jayarajan, P Jayarajan, K P Sahadevan and several other party workers reached the premises of the jail.
