Two held for attempting to burn alive family of four

Having come to know of that, A Sangitha (24), of the same area, alerted Vishmila Devi’s brother Ranganathan (22) and asked him to warn Vishmila Devi.However, Ranganathan mistook the information passed on to him and, instead, asked Raja (22), brother-in-law of Sangitha, to warn Sangitha about her fidelity. This led to a quarrel between the two families.On Saturday, Sangitha’s husband Arjunan accosted Ranganathan over the ‘false information’ floated against his wife which snowballed into exchange of heavy blows. At one point, Ranganathan bit Arjunan’s hand before the neighbours pacified the duo.However, around, 7 pm on Saturday, Anjunan, his brother Raja, Sangitha, their relatives M Senthil of Nochiyam, KI Mani (35), Ramar (50) Ramar’s wife Santhi (40), their son Manikandan (20), and Arjunan’s mother S Parvathi (55) went to Ranganathan’s house and allegedly pelted stones at the house.Panic stricken Rangarajan, his parents Pitchaimuthu (45) and Poovayee (40), and his sister Vishmila Devi rushed into the house and bolted the door from inside.However, the furious Raja and Mani locked Ranganathan’s house from outside. They had also torched the thatched roof of the house and fled. On hearing their screams, their neighbours Baskar and Pandian broke open the door and rescued the four who were struggling for life. However, the house and the articles were reduced to ashes. On Sunday, based on the complaint by Pitchaimuthu, Perambalur Inspector (in-charge)Rathinasamy registered a case against Arjunan, Raja, Senthil, Mani, Ramar, Manikandan, Santhi, Parvathi and Sangitha.Later, the police arrested Raja and his mother Parvathi and were looking out for the others.first published:August 20, 2012, 10:57 ISTlast updated:August 20, 2012, 10:57 IST
