HYDERABAD: Youngsters who like to cruise on their bikes without wearing helmets must be on their guard from now on. After the special drive against drunken driving, the city traffic police have decided to crack the whip on helmet-less riding. Police officials say the intention is to make bike riders aware about the dangers of riding without a helmet with road accidents increasing by the day. According to police records, four persons died in road mishaps on November 18 because they did not wear helmets. CV Anand, additional commissioner of police (Traffic) said, “We have already started creating awareness among bike riders on the need to wear helmets. Most riders involved in fatal accidents on city roads died due to head injuries.” He added that traffic policemen have found that more than 60 per cent of bike riders do not wear helmets. “The traffic police have started creating awareness for riders on Facebook. Every day more than ten accidents are occurring in the city out of which five are bike accidents and most victims are in the 25-30 age group. The two-wheeler riders have to take responsibility and wear helmets,” said Anand. Naveen Kumar Agarwal, a bike rider said he has been wearing a helmet ever since he learnt driving and once it protected him from a serious accident. “My appeal to all citizens is to wear the helmet for your own safety and make sure its a branded one,” he said. Meanwhile, traffic police standing at various junctions have decided to take the initiative to suggest two-wheeler riders to wear helmets.
