ROURKELA: At least three persons died in wall collapse and more than 150 mud houses damaged in the torrential rain on Thursday night. The deceased identified as Sukru Jojo of Pahartola slum at Sector-6, Bhagu Sahu of Gopabandhupali in Rourkela and Mangal Mundari of Ramloi village in Bisra block got trapped in their houses that collapsed following heavy downpour.The menacingly rising water level in the river inundated several villages on its way. The situation aggravated as a majority areas of the district were witnessing intermittent rain for the past eight days. Sources said water level in Brahmani at Panposh bridge rose to 178 metres, just two metres below the danger mark of 180. Till 4 pm, eight of the 11 sluice gates of Mandira dam were opened. The dam authorities informed that inflow to the reservoir was 68,693 cusecs and outflow to Brahmani was 56,975 cusecs. Low-lying residential areas of Dandiapali, Garjan and Balughat along the banks of Brahmani were submerged.  District Collector Rupa Roshan Sahu confirmed three deaths in the district, adding the situation was being monitored closely to meet any exigency.  In the past 24 hours, Bisra block recorded highest rainfall at 187 mm and Nuagaon and Bonai recorded about 162 mm. Very heavy downpours measuring beyond 124.5 mm were reported from Rajgangpur, Kuanrmunda, Lahunipara and Kutra. Rourkela city recorded 72 mm of rainfall between 12 am to 2 pm on Friday. The Gurunida-Bonai road in Bonai sub-division has developed breaches.  Relief materials were distributed among 30 families whose houses were partially   damaged while several areas of OMM Basti, Kerkettasai and Patmunda in Koida block were waterlogged, informed BDO Parikshit Sethi.
