New Delhi: Delhi University on Wednesday suspended Ramjas College Vice-Principal BN Ray, who has been accused of sodomising 15 male students.

“The Vice-Principal has been suspended from his post till an inquiry committee probing the sexual harassment charges finishes its task,” Chairperson of the College Complaint Committee, Madhumita Banerjee said.

"The concerned person will cease to be a teacher in the college with immediate effect. He cannot take any classes," Banerjee told IANS.

She said a "prima facie case has been put up against professor BN Ray and the complaint committee will start the inquiry soon.”

"The committee will submit a report in 15 working days from the day the inquiry begins. The decision was taken to make the inquiry fair and impartial," said Banerjee, a botany lecturer with the college.

Last week, students of the Ramjas College had accused Ray of sexually harassing male students and had demanded immediate action against him.

In a resolution submitted to principal Rajender Prasad, students said, "There have been proven charges against Ray of sexual assault and abuse of students, both inter- and intra-departmentally."
