CHENNAI: TN State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered a probe into the death of five youth in an encounter by the police at their residence in Velachery in the small hours of February 23.SHRC acting chairman K Baskaran, based on a report submitted by the Adyar range Deputy Commissioner of Police R Sudhakar, who led the encounter team, directed the Additional Director General of Police attached to the SHRC, to probe the encounter deaths and submit its report in eight weeks.Meanwhile, advocates AP Surya Prakasam and K  Ashok Chakravarthy, president and general seretary respectively of the Association of Lawyers Against Corruption and Oppression, have appealed to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to order an investigation by the CBI into the encounter deaths. In a communication to the CJI, the duo alleged that the police themselves had taken the power of judiciary and handed out the death penalty, without giving any opportunity to the five youth. The message of the police was that they did not have any faith in the judiciary and that they would be the prosecutors and also judges. “Since we suspect that this is a barbaric crime in which TN police has actively planned and executed, this communication may be treated as a public interest writ petition and the CBI be directed to take over investigation to uphold the personal liberties of the citizens enshrined in the Constitution,’’ they added.
