Chennai: As a breakthrough continued to elude it, the Special Investigation Division probing the murder of a senior Tamil Nadu unit BJP functionary on Wednesday announced a cash reward of Rs five lakh each for information about four persons suspected to be involved in the killing.
The SID named two more suspects - 'Panna' Ismail and Abu Backer Siddique - in the gruesome murder of 52-year-old BJP leader V Ramesh, alias 'Auditor' Ramesh, besides Bilal Malick and 'Police' Fakruddin, named as suspects on July 21.
All the four, who carry a reward of Rs five lakh each, were already wanted in connection with the planting of the pipe bomb on the yatra route of senior BJP leader L K Advani near Madurai in 2011.
"The SID is making efforts to trace the four absconding persons involved in the 2011 pipe bomb planting case and some other cases as also in connection with the murder of Ramesh," a police release said. Apart from this, a cash reward of Rs. two lakhs will be given to those who furnish useful information leading to the arrest of other persons involved in the murder of Ramesh and Hindu Munnai leader Vellaiyappan who was hacked to death in Vellore last month, the release said.
Last week, police had released the sketches of the suspect involved in the murder of Ramesh by a four-member gang on July 19, which has evoked condemnation from various leaders, including Chief Minister Jayalalithaa who constituted the SID comprising Crime-Branch CID police personnel.
A report from Salem said a SID team led by SP Anbu examined the spot where Ramesh was murdered, looking for possible clues and the weapons used in the brutal assault. A search of nearby sewage yielded a pocket diary. However, no weapons were found.
A sniffer dog pressed into service led the police upto the railway station although nothing concrete emerged.
