London: Frank Milford, husband to Anita for 81 years, has died, ending Britain's longest marriage.

Frank died midday on Tuesday at the Warwick Park nursing home in the town of Plymouth, holding Anita's hands, their son said.

The couple, both 101 years old, met at a YMCA dance and got married at Cornwall on May 26, 1928.

A spokeswoman for the nursing home said Frank died peacefully with Anita at his side.

Their 76-year-old son, also called Frank, said his mother was holding his father's hand when he died.

"She's very upset obviously, but she was sitting holding his hand when he passed away," he said.

The couple, who lived through the Nazi bombing of Plymouth and escaped two bombs, said the secret of their marriage was "give and take" and making up after rows with a kiss and a cuddle.

Frank and Anita Milford had two children, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
