THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The search committee for the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor of the Calicut University could not reach a consensus on a candidate for the post.Following this, the panel which met here on Wednesday forwarded a three-member panel to Governor R S Gavai for being considered to the post of Vice-Chancellor. The three-member panel comprises academicians Dr Abdul Salam, Jameela Begum and A K Mubarak Pasha. The search committee has Chief Secretary P Prabhakaran as the government representative, CPM leader C H Ashik as the representative of the Calicut University Senate and Calicut University former Vice- Chancellor Syed Iqbal Hasnain as the representative of the UGC. In an earlier meeting of the search committee, UGC representative and the government nominee had proposed the name of V P Abdul Hameed as the vice- chancellor. However, the Senate representative had opposed the name as he was a former member of the PSC. He had pointed out that a person who had been a PSC member could only be appointed as the chairman of the PSC or member of the UPSC. There is a bar on him to hold any other post. Later, the move to appoint Hameed, an IUML nominee, became controversial as Hameed was only a higher secondary teacher that too in a school where his father was the manager. As per norms, a Vice-Chancellor should have at least 10 years of teaching experience in colleges.
