CHENNAI: Three persons, who murdered a man on Thursday at the behest of his wife in Vadapalani, were arrested by a special police team in Tambaram on Friday.
According to police, M Sampath, a family friend of P Uma Maheshwari (40), and two of his accomplices allegedly plotted the murder of Maheswari's alcoholic husband N Prasanna (45). Sampath (44), a resident of Perungalathur, and his associates E Nandakumar alias Appu (27) of East Tambaram and Ammu alias L Govindaraj of Perungulathur were picked up at the bus stand in Tambaram, when they were trying to flee the city.
Maheswari, who surrendered soon after the incident, is already in judicial custody.Upon being questioned, the trio confessed to murdering Prasanna at his Vadapalani residence, the police said in a release. In her statement to the police, Maheswari claimed that her husband sold all her property worth `8 crore and subjected her to sexual assaults. Hence, she sought the help of Sampath to bump him off.In a twomonthlong crackdown in northern zone of the State, police have cracked 217 cases and arrested 200 criminals, a top police official said on Friday. C Sylendra Babu, IG, North Zone, said 400 sovereigns and a large number of vehicles were seized. The police recovered 100 twowheelers, seven trucks, nine cars and a van in cases booked in several disttricts, he said. Besides, 30 tonnes of lead was seized in Villupuram, he said. Handing over the recovered gold to its owners, he said a total of 758 land grabbing plaints have come to the notice of police and 70 FIRs have been filed."We are probing a case in Panruti where 80 kg of gold was stolen from a pawn shop," he added.
