PUDUCHERRY: On the  auspicious occasion  of Maasi Magam, more than a 100 temple idols  were brought to sea shore and ‘Theerthavari’, ritual bathing, was performed here on Thursday. Deities of Sri Manakula Vinayagar temple, Sri Varadaraja Perumal temple, Veedapuriswarar Temple, Murugan temple at Kadirkamam,  Ranganathan temple at Senzy, Murugan temple at Mailam were among the idols that were brought to the shore.Thousands of devotees gathered to get a glimpse of the holy ritual. After the ritual immersion, idols would be returned to their respective temples in huge procession, before which they would be kept in a large hall on Mission Street.The police have put up surveillance cameras to monitor the activities of anti-social elements and prevent any untoward incident.Every year, Maasi Magam is celebrated on the full moon day of Makam Nakshatra (Maagam or Magha) on the Tamil month of Maasi (February-March). As Maasi Magam is observed on the full moon day, it is also called Masi Pournami.On Maasi Magam day, all the households prepare payasam and offer it to Lord Chandra (Moon God). It is believed that offering payasam to Lord Chandra on Masi Pourmani day brings good health and long life to children.
