BHUBANESWAR: Minati Patra would now be able to lead an independent life, without any physical support of others. The 45-year-old woman from Berhampur, who had lost both her legs in an accident, would now be able to walk on her own feet. She has not only regained mobility but also the ability to ride on her own scooter, thanks to the fitting of artificial limbs, more famously known as Jaipur foot, by the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) here on Tuesday. The world’s largest organisation for enabling the disabled to overcome their impairment through provisioning of artificial limbs and callipers announced opening of a full-fledged centre in Bhubaneswar. The fully equipped centre that has come up in association with the Infinity Group would custom-make and fit artificial limbs, callipers and limb appliances to the needy people completely free of charge. Jaipur foot is closest to human foot in terms of flexions, functions and cosmosis. With the fitment, a below-knee limb amputee can walk almost normally, run, climb a tree or mountain, sit cross-legged, squat, ride cycle or drive a car. The above knee amputee also gains maximum mobility with the Jaipur foot or knee. The BMVSS initiative has been taken across the world to benefit more than 12 lakh amputees, polio patients and other functionally disabled in around 25 countries, including India. “We have 22 centres in the country and planning to expand to more areas. We have conducted camps in the strife-torn Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and are planning to go to Libya and Palestine soon. The Libya camp would be held as soon as the situation normalises. We are also planning to open a permanent centre at Ranchi,” founder and chief patron DR Mehta told mediapersons here on Tuesday. There are a large number of people in the State requiring artificial limbs. But almost the bulk of them have till date no access to the aids and appliances. The problem has been resolved with setting up of the centre in Bhubaneswar, BMVSS chairman Ravindra Chameria said adding the free service would also be extended to the rural areas through camps. Among others, Infinity Education president HP Das and BMVSS trustee PK Mishra spoke.
