Temple attacked over eviction fear

The Svayambhu Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple located in Banjara Hills was allegedly attacked Tuesday by nearby residents. The temple is maintained by the Hare Krishna Movement.

According to the police and the Hare Krishna Movement representatives, a mob of 40 to 50 people forcibly entered the temple premises Tuesday afternoon. “They ransacked the temple, took away ‘swamiji’ and stole valuable items,” the management said in its complaint to the Banjara Hills police.

They also said that a Kalyana Mandapam (function hall) was being constructed on the premises for the Krishnastami festivities on August 15. The mob damaged the flexes and drove away workers from the site.

Police said the accused persons are allegedly nearby residents who received eviction notices from the endowments department for constructing houses on their land. “The people resorted to the attack fearing they would be forcibly evacuated and that the temple management was responsible for the notice,” a police officer said.

Banjara Hills inspector Chandrasekhar Goud said cases of criminal trespass and damage to property were registered. However, no arrests have been made so far.
