New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested an official of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and a middleman for taking a bribe of Rs 5,00,000.
Acting on a complaint of the owner of an engineering college in Andhra Pradesh that the AICTE official had demanded Rs 20 lakh for the inspection and approval of his college, the investigating agency arrested the AICTE member secretary K Narayan Rao and middlemen S B Subba Rao.
"The duo had agreed to Rs 5,00,000 as first installment. They were arrested on Thursday morning while accepting the amount," the agency said.
Searches were conducted at the office premises of Narayan Rao and his residence at Hyderabad in Delhi and at the residence of Subba Rao at Ongole in Andhra Pradesh, according to an official statement.
The CBI said cash amounting to Rs 9,00,000 was recovered from the Delhi residence of Narayan Rao, as well as incriminating documents about bank accounts and properties, which were being studied.
