BODI: Forty-six families of Tamils in Udumbancholai area in Kerala have been assaulted and driven out of the State. They include students who have to appear for examinations.Tamils in Munnar took out a procession on Tuesday to hail the ruling of the Supreme Court on the plea of Kerala to reduced the storage level in Mullaiperiyar dam to 120 feet and also condemn the action of Kerala government over the issue.Angered by this protest, Keralites in the area allegedly attacked the Tamils. Plantation owners in the area have refused to provide work to Tamils and forced them to leave the estates.Many Tamils living in Karithodu, Nedunkundam and Kariyanmalai areas, affected by this development, left the area in the night along the Sakkuvathi Mettu, Ramakkal Mettu ghat road and reached Sankarapuram, Konampatti and other areas and reached their kin houses here.Among them are a number of students who are sitting for half-yearly exams in schools in Nedunkandam. They are now worried over the future of their studies.The workers said that they had been denied food and medicines in Kerala and were also refused treatment in hospitals. Meanwhile, 11 persons from four families, who were living in Kanchirankalayam village in Udumbancholai area have sought refuge in the office of Bodi tahsildar on Wednesday. They were also carrying a two-month old infant, who was ill, but denied treatment in their area.Tahsildar Nagamalai said that the families were being provided food and medical attention.Moses, a parish priest, who had also escaped from Kerala, said that he was living in Kerala for over 30 years and there were a number of Tamil families working in the estates there. Now they were facing attacks by Keralites who were also abusing the women. Karuppasamy, a labourer, had been injured in the attack, he said and sought protection for the Tamils living in Kerala.
