The selection of mathematical talents is taking place in full swing in all the state schools with the deadline of the phase one falling on September 30.
With the aim of nurturing mathematical talents as part of the National Year of Mathematics, the State Council for Education Research and Training launched Nurturing Mathematical Talents in Schools (NuMATS).
The programme seeks to select the students and train them to compete in the national and global mathematics olympiads and other events.
The selection will be made at the school, subdistrict and state levels.
“The teachers are required to select five students from class VI of each school, two from the general category, one each from the SC and ST categories and one student with disabilities based on the academic performance and skills.
A test will be conducted at the sub-district level for four parts- quiz, note making, practicals and problem solving- in November.
In the test, 9 students each will be selected from each of the 163 sub-districts,” said J Lidsonraj, programme coordinator.
The students will have to attempt a test conducted at the state-level in January 2013 from which 74 students will be selected.
A 15-day camp will be held in April- May for the selected students and the programme will continue till the student reaches class X.
“This will be an ongoing programme wherein 74 students will be selected each year from class VI,” said K A Hashim, director of SCERT.
“The selection procedures are going on in all the schools.
“We conducted a test to select the students on Tuesday,” said Sreekala, AEO of Ernakulam.
The National Year of Mathematics is being held as part of the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of mathwizard Sreenivasa Ramanujan.
