CHENNAI: “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation,” said Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday quoting Greek philosopher Aristotle, while stressing the high-level skills being imparted to trainees at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy at Oonamanchery. She was speaking at the passing out parade of 1,061 sub-inspector trainees, the largest-ever batch to take oath in a ceremony organised for the first time in TN.Recalling her dream of setting up a police training centre, on par with international standards in the state, Jayalalithaa said she had laid the foundation for the Academy in 2004 during her first stint as CM, and she was proud of the training being given to the recruits there. She hoped  that the trainees had fully learnt about maintenance of law and order and how to conduct themselves with members of the public.Pointing out that laws were created to improve quality of life, she exhorted the police to adopt a humane approach while implementing them. “At the same time, excessive sympathy towards the undeserving should be avoided,” she said. While police must conduct themselves in a manner that would help win people’s hearts, they should put down murderers and robbers with an iron hand, she said.
