RAMANATHAPURAM: It was too late. Yet the Rameswaram Police tried their best to figure out the lodge where a couple reportedly consumed pesticide. Ramasamy (60) and his wife Rajeswari (55), from Kannapatti near Nilakottai in Dindigul had booked a room in a private lodge on Thursday upon their arrival in Rameswaram. The problem began when a police constable from Theni, who happened to be a relative of the victims, informed the district police about the suicide bid. Earlier, Ramasamy rang up the constable and told him that they were in Rameswaram and would kill themselves as they did not want to be a burden to others. The constable immediately passed the information to the police. A flurry of activity followed as the police set out to trace the couple and launched a search operation in all lodges in the town. Around the same time, Chokkanathan, a private lodge manager, contacted the police after the occupants of one of the rooms did not answer his calls. Soon the police rushed to the spot and broke the door open only to find two persons dead. Later they were identified as the same couple who had informed the constable about their suicide bid. By then, it was midnight. The police also recovered a suicide note which said nobody instigated them to commit suicide. It is said that Rajeswari was mentally-ill and this prompted the couple to end life. Cases have been registered.
