Frustrated with the way the examination wing of Pondicherry University functions, students of the Pondicherry Engineering College (PEC) boycotted classes for the fifth day on Wednesday seeking changes in the examination system of Pondicherry Central University to which the institution is affiliated.
The students have been objecting to a change incorporated in the policy of evaluation of arrear papers by Pondicherry University in May, 2012. Previously internal evaluation done before the regular examination was added while evaluating a regular paper, but was not carried over for an arrear paper examination. Now, the internal evaluation for the regular paper will be carried over in the first and consequent attempts in case the students fails in the paper.
PEC students pointed out that there was no standard rule for internal assessment and alleged variation in the internal marks given by institutions. Several students in the college have very low internal marks which makes it difficult to pass an arrear exam. The students demanded that arrears evaluated during May, 2012 semester should be evaluated as per the old policy.
The students further said that the policy change at the 71st Academic Council was not informed to the students either by the university or by the college before the May 2012 examinations. Any policy change should be intimated to students through official circulars, they added.
The students were also unhappy with the delay in publication of results. They demanded that evaluation of the examination papers be completed before the start of next semester and grades published immediately after evaluation. They also wanted publication of revaluation results within two weeks. Citing the marksheet scam currently being investigated by CBI, the students also asked the university to provide photocopies of evaluated answer scripts.
