CHENNAI: Nandini Voice For the Deprived, a Chennai-based NGO, recently organised an essay competition for college students in Tamil Nadu on “Should Koodankulam Nuclear Plant be abandoned?”Students who wanted the project to be commissioned pointed out that India had no options other than nuclear power in view of the huge scarcity of coal, fuel oil and natural gas  and their rising international price.  They also mentioned that if non-conventional energy such as solar and wind power were utilised to the maximum, they would not be adequate, considering the futuristic demand for power in the  country.  Those who wanted the project abandoned pointed out that  human life was more important than economic and industrial development and that such factors cannot be accorded priority, ignoring the  safety of humans, particularly when  local stake holders are not convinced. The 10 students selected for the prize were — G Krithi,  Jeppiar Engineering College, Chennai; Pooja Sathyanarayanan, JBAS College for Women, Chennai; S Divya, Government Arts College, Salem; Kavitha, Joe Suresh  Engineering College, Tirunelveli; GK Padma, Annammal College of Education for Women, Thoothukudi; S Mohammed Shygal  Akram,  National College of Engineering, Tirunelveli; R Pradeep, Velammal Engineering College, Chennai;  S Benon, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore; V Bhaskaran,  Madras University; and B Vijayarajan, P S R Engineering College, Sivakasi.
