BANGALORE: The II PUC final examinations concluded on Thursday amid confusion among students, parents and the Department of PU Education (DPUE). It is said private tuition and the increasing dependence of students on tuition, especially for Science subject played a role in the trouble. Following the first leak of the Mathematics question paper, the DPUE ordered the immediate suspension of 14 government college lecturers for their alleged role in the leak. All these lecturers conducted private tuition. “I go to tuition for the extra coaching and revision exercises. It is not that our lecturers do not teach us well in college, but the advantage is extra information and guaranteed questions that will come in the exams,” said Sumedha Kulkarni, a I PUC Science student. Principal of Surana PU College B R Chandrashekharappa said tuition created a ‘phobia’ among students and parents alike.”Lecturers take tuition in private in most colleges. This has created a phobia that students cannot do without going to tuition. Unfortunately, even parents feel insecure if their wards are not going to these tuition classes,” he said. Manjunath, a PU lecturer from Ramanagaram, said, “I totally oppose lecturers who are employed in colleges and also take private tuition. In my opinion, they should be severely penalised.” Director of the city-based tutorial BASE Vallish N Herur said that most students want to get admitted to professional courses that have competitive entrance tests. Commissioner for DPUE Rashmi V told Express everything possible to reduce the dependence of students on tuition was being done. “The entire focus of the students and parents is on marks. This situation was created as PU education lacked textbooks. We introduced National Core Curriculum for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology (PCMB) to reduce dependence on tuition,” she said.
