KOZHIKODE: The little known township of Vengalam will be the centre of all attention of volleyball enthusiasts in the state for the next week with the 41st State Senior Volleyball Championship commencing here at the A K Rajesh Nagar on Sunday.Elamaram Kareem MLA and actress Samvritha Sunil inaugurated the tournament in the presence of organising committee chairman K V Dasan MLA. The tournament, being held over eight days in a league-cum-knockout basis, will feature more than 400 players representing 23 teams - 14 from the men’s section and 9 from the women’s section - and over 100 officials. Many prominent international players will be turning up for the teams in this edition of the championship.Defending champions Ernakulam will once again start the favourites with former India captain Tom Joseph and blocker Kishore Kumar bolstering their ranks while hosts Kozhikode will be buoyed by the addition of India international Azeez Thayambath to their squad.This is not the first time that Vengalam is playing host to the state’s premier volleyball championship with them having hosted the event four years back.
