THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : R K Singh, Secretary, Local Self-Government Department and George Chackacherry, executive director, Suchitwa Mission, received the National Urban Water Award 2010 from Union Minister for Urban Development Kamal Nath for the ‘Green Kerala Express’ reality show at a function held in New Delhi. ‘Green Kerala Express’ was a unique social reality show on television aimed at finding the best panchayat in Kerala. Under the initiative of the Ministry of Local Self-Government and Suchitwa Mission, the show was released by the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology and was telecast by Doordarshan. The show spread over 103 episodes was telecast during 2010. The best performing panchayat received Rs one crore. A total of Rs 3 crore was spent as prize money for the winning panchayats and municipalities. About 40 experts form different fields judged the performance of the local bodies.
