CHENNAI: Urging people not to forget their culture and roots, popular folk artist Dr Pushpavanan Kuppuswamy on Friday said, "People tend to forget the culture that they belong to."He was speaking at the inaugural function of the state level youth festival, EUFFORIE 2K11, held at the SRM University campus.Recalling the time he was in Canada,  he said he still wore his veshti (dhoti) despite the temperature being Minus Five degree centigrade. He felt that wearing his dhoti at those climatic conditions was a portrayal of his culture. Organised and hosted by the National Service Scheme (NSS), the event aims to remind the audience of cultural traditions and the ethnic beauty of it.Singing a song in various styles, Kuppuswamy showed that even songs could be used to bring different types of people together. Anitha Kuppuswamy, his wife who was also present, joined him in his performances. SRM University Vice-Chancellor M Ponnavaikko, spoke on the functions and primary objectives of the NSS. He emphasised on the point that “the motive is to bring all the people and communities under one umbrella, and in other words ‘unity in diversity’.” In a multi-cultural and multi-lingual world, there is all the more reason for these diversities to be united, he said, adding that the NSS had taken this as a special task to provide all kinds of services to various communities.Music and dance could also be used as a medium to bring people together, he said, adding, “Local folklore has all genres of stories, music, dance and other arts to unite people. This is not only to entertain people but to educate people on moral values.
